Snowy Owl
Snowy Owls will typically winter as far south as the 42 latitude where I find them. 2009 was an epic year due to a high birth rate and over competition for their favorite food supply in the tundra – the Lemming. Farther south they are happy to feed on Voles, Mice and other small critters. 2009 saw a migration as far south as Georgia. These migrations take a toll on these mostly immature males and  a high mortality rate occurs. Typically, these birds do not migrate to the same exact locations year after year. The weather systems play a bigger role in where they land. Large open fields and marshes which resemble the tundra is the habitat they search out for. Massachusetts offers a dynamic coast line with many long continuous marshes which to the Snowy Owl resemble their summer home range that is the northern tundra.
